Mock Trial - Districts

The West Mock Trial team took 2nd place in districts this year. The team went 3 and 1 and did an excellent job. We one rounds against Pleasant Valley, East Stroudsburg South and Notre Dame. We lost in the finals to Wallenpaupack, which is a fine team.

West Champions of the PHSSL

The Pocono Mountain West Speech and Debate Team were crowned champions of the Pennsylvania High School Speech League (PHSSL) District 8 tournament this Saturday February 23, 2007.


The top three team’s scores were: 130 PMW, 56 Scranton HS, and 53 pts E. L. Meyers High School . Fifteen schools participated in the event.


This is the first District Championship in Pocono Mountain History. This was truly a team effort. Please congratulate any member of the team that you might know.


The following are the team members who contributed to this win and will represent PMW at States:


Qualifying for States from the Pennsylvania High School Speech League Championships


  • Joe Lopresti, 9 th Grade 1 st place “ Wondering Y ” Informative Speaking
  • Kyra Tan Tioncgo, 10 th grade, 1 st place Lincoln Douglas Debate
  • Sarah VanSise, 11 th grade, 1 st place, Poetry Interpretation, “ Teachers”
  • Brandi Guilherme 11 th grade and Justin Lovell 12 th grade, 1 st place, Policy Team Debate
  • Erika Crown, 12 th grade, Humorous Interpretation, Wagner’s, “Is there Intelligent life in the Universe”
  • Justin Kurek, 11 th and Brian Cavanaugh, 11 th , 2 nd place, Policy Debate
  • Derren Adejere, 2 nd place, 11 th , Persuasive Speaking, “ I am a Black Woman”

Three additional students will be picked to go to states to represent PMW in impromptu speaking, Radio Announcing, and Student Congress.

Novice Policy Debate is only at the District level, non-advancing to state, PMW closed out Novice Policy debate:

  • 1 st Place Novice policy debate: Kebrinna Richards and DJ Wagner
  • 2 nd Place Novice Policy Debate: Cierra Ragland and Katerina Veloudos

The team travels next weekend to the National Catholic Forensic Scranton District Qualifier. Then, the team travels to State finals with 10 events on March 28 th and 29 t . They will attempt to be the first team to place at states in PMSD history. Wish them luck!
